Purpose of the role

To design frameworks, provide governance of model risk, controls, infrastructure and reporting as well as providing oversight for compliance of the Model Owner community with the Model Risk Management framework 

Accountabilities

  • Development, maintenance and management of a globally consistent model risk framework that complies with the firm’s major regulatory requirements.
  • Delivery of model inventory and workflow, including associated data quality & reporting and oversight of Quantitative Processes.
  • Assessment of the controls employed by the various areas of Barclays that own models to determine their level of compliance with and implementation of the Model Risk Framework.
  • Establishment of the Model risk appetite. Model risk tolerance reports are provided to the respective Group level and legal entity committees where relevant.
  • Management of the strategic Validation Center of Excellence, performing independent quality assurance to assess whether validation outcomes are well supported by IVU’s assessment of the model.
  • Oversight of regulatory and audit responses and interactions within MRM.

  • Accountable for the control and governance agenda of the business division / function.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays.

  • This position is focused on leading the development of the AI/ML (artificial intelligence/machine learning) risk management framework and its embedment within the organisation.
  • The role’s responsibilities will include shaping the design, rollout and evolution of the framework, that incorporates supervisory expectations and industry best practices to ensure an appropriately defined risk-assessed approach to AI/ML oversight.
  • This role also requires leading engagement/communication across a wide range of stakeholders (e.g. AI/ML Owners, Quantitative Analytics Teams, Technology, Legal, Compliance, Validation Teams, etc.) to ensure the framework and its codification into Policy and Standards are well understood and appropriately integrated into the broader Barclays Control Framework.
  • Develop an enterprise-wide AI/ML model definition to identify AI/ML risks.
  • Implement a successful risk-based operating model for responsible AI/ML adoption.
  • Invest in capabilities that support AI/ML adoption and risk management.
  • Lead development and maintenance of an AI Risk Management Framework that address AI/ML-specific risks, aligns and complies with supervisory expectations and industry best practices.
  • Provide oversight for the operation of the AI/ML Forum as a senior body tasked with oversight of AI risk and oversee see compliance with AI Risk governance processes.
  • Ensure that new developments in AI/ML as well as broader model risk related supervisory guidance are reflected in areas of policy improvement and support remediation.
  • Ensure that the AI Risk Framework is communicated in a simple, clear and concise way throughout the firm.
  • Manage effective two-way relationships across businesses, technology and other intersecting functions (e.g. Risk, Compliance, Legal) across Barclays.
  • Oversee deployment of AI workflow tool to support AI Delivery Workflow and Risk Assessment processes.
  • Ensure effective interaction with Barclays Internal Audit, external audit and regulators and driving remediation actions to resolution as needed.
  • The role will demand advanced problem solving, strategic, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of SR11-7, SS1/23, EU AI Act, NIST and other applicable model / AI risk guidance or laws.
  • Provide appropriate guidance, challenge and advice to senior mgmt. with regards to AI/ML adoption and risk management.
  • Build and maintain relationships across the business and functions such as Legal, Compliance, Risk, Chief Data Office, Chief Technology Office.
  • Build and lead a first-class AI/ML risk-management team to ensure successful delivery of business objectives.
