About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Onboarding Manager to create, operate and scale New Hire orientation and long-term learning for OpenAI’s technical staff, including engineers and research scientists. The ideal candidate will be a strategic partner to these teams, deeply understanding their organizational needs and bringing operational rigor to effectively run this programming.

This opportunity is particularly exciting for someone with a background in coding, engineering, or research who can understand the nature of technical work and help ensure they’re set up for early and long-term sustained success.

You’ll have several areas of responsibilities, including:

  • Partnering with Engineering and Research teams to understand their unique onboarding needs and organizational culture.

  • Developing, implementing, and managing technical onboarding programs that align with OpenAI’s operating principles and values.

  • Creating engaging and relevant content for onboarding sessions for Day 1 and beyond.

  • Facilitate and lead onboarding sessions and events, ensuring new hires are supported and engaged.

  • Building strong relationships with technical stakeholders and new hires, acting as a point of contact throughout the onboarding process.

  • Gathering and analyzing feedback from new hires and stakeholders to identify and implement program improvements.

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate onboarding with broader People initiatives and strategic priorities.

  • Supporting the development of learning paths and training programs to ensure technical new hires have the resources they need to succeed.

We’ll look for these qualities, experience, and skills:

  • 10+ years of experience in program management, learning and development, technical training, or a similar role within a technical environment.

  • Proven ability to build and manage onboarding or training programs for technical teams.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Strong project management abilities with attention to detail and a knack for organization.

  • Ability to thrive and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, ever-evolving environment.

  • Creative and innovative approach to problem-solving and designing/implementing programs.

  • Experience with collecting and using data to inform decisions and improve program effectiveness.

  • Passion for fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace culture.

Location and Workplace

This role is based in our San Francisco, CA office and we offer relocation assistance to new employees.

Our offices use a hybrid work model: three days in the office per week with optional work from home on Thursdays and Fridays. Our open-plan offices have height-adjustable desks, conference rooms, phone booths, well-stocked kitchens full of snacks and drinks and more.
