About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Data Scientist to join our dynamic IT Center of Excellence team.

The IT Center of Excellence Team has a vision to gain clarity, confidence, and tools to use deep analysis, modelling, agility and forecasting to inform decision-making, maintain a healthy donor population, and improve patient outcomes with the overall goal of helping the health systems operate more efficiently to derive the best quality and value. In this role, you will harness data for advanced mathematical programming, statistical modelling, and simulation modelling to generate insights and decision-making tools.


Reporting to the Team Lead of the Data & Analytics Centre for Excellence. You will bring profound expertise in advanced methodologies encompassing mathematical programming, statistical modeling, and simulation modeling to generate insights and decision-making tools. Collaborating closely across all programs, you will serve as a trusted advisor, guiding strategic decisions to ensure optimal patient treatment and care, delivering dependable products and services meeting the highest safety and quality standards. Additionally, you will contribute to the Healthy Donor Base Analytics & Modeling initiative, offering specialized skills in predictive and prescriptive model development, forecasting, and statistical inference derived from historical and observational data. Your proactive approach will involve crafting models to interpret patterns, anticipate business outcomes, and recommend suitable actions across diverse future scenarios.

Formula for success

  • Utilizing your skills in architecture and implementation, you will architect and implement data science solutions, encompassing model definitions, data analysis, methodological approaches, and deployment strategies.
  • Capitalizing on your expertise in data analysis and modeling, you will generate data-driven features to condense business-relevant concepts and facilitate informed decision-making processes.
  • Drawing upon your collaboration skills, you will collaborate with domain experts to integrate data science products into decision-making frameworks and tools.
  • Employing your communication skills, you will communicate methodologies and insights from complex analyses, fostering consensus among individuals from diverse backgrounds and technical expertise.
  • Acting as the representative of analytics and knowledge-sharing efforts both internally and externally, you will contribute to enhancing the reputation of the Centre of Excellence through active engagement and presentation of projects to internal and external audiences.
  • Showcasing your skills in engagement and presentation, you will actively enhance the reputation of the Centre of Excellence through presentations and engagement with internal and external stakeholders.

Demonstrated education and skills

  • Advanced (Masters) degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution, preferably a University Degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, computer engineering or related field; an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. 
  • Three to five years of quantitative and qualitative research and analytics with proficiency in statistical packages.
  • Three to five years of combined experience with data processing, data science and modelling including forecasting/predictive analytics, multivariate testing, and optimization. 
  • Proficiency in R or Python is necessary.
  • Working knowledge of Power BI, Azure Synapse/Data Studio or SQL Server Data Warehouse is a strong asset.
  • Ability to think strategically and execute tactically and manage complex analytical projects.

What you can expect 

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time/2 days of the week. 
  • You will work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hours per day.  
  • If you are located outside of Ottawa, you may be expected to travel to our office location in Ottawa – 1800 Alta Vista Dr, quarterly for in-person team meetings when required
