About the Synapse team

Synapse is a product development consultancy working with the world’s most ambitious companies to envision, create, and launch breakthrough AI-powered intelligent products. Sitting at the intersection of hardware, embedded systems, and AI, we specialize in engineering-led innovation that transforms business and unlocks entirely new market categories.

YOUR ROLE

In this role you will play a key role in:

·       Defining and developing intelligent robotic systems powered by Vision Language Agents (VLAs) that interpret goals, reason across context, and interact with the physical world through sensors, actuators, and digital APIs.

·       Leading technical architecture for prototypes and MVPs involving embedded AI, vision, audio, and multimodal inputs.

·       Translating real-world customer problems into scalable product concepts and guiding cross-functional engineering teams to bring those to life.

·       Collaborating with designers, hardware engineers, and data specialists to align on technical feasibility, user value, and system integration.

·       Supporting proposal and pitch development for new business opportunities, including thought leadership and client engagement.

YOUR PROFILE

We would love to see a candidate with:

Education & Experience

·       Master’s or equivalent specialism in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, or a related technical discipline. PhD a plus.

·       8+ years of experience in AI/ML or intelligent systems development, with at least 1 year integrating LLMs, vision-language models, or multimodal AI into physical products or robotic systems.

·       Demonstrated success leading end-to-end development of AI-powered physical systems in domains such as robotics, industrial automation, logistics, or smart devices.

·       Experience with multimodal human-robot interaction (HRI) and collaborative robotics (cobots) is a strong plus.

Technical Expertise

  • Deep expertise in robotics AI, including motion planning, control systems, sensor fusion, and complex physical manipulation in dynamic environments.
  • Proficiency with robotics frameworks and simulation tools (e.g. Nvidia Omniverse/Isaac Sim, ROS, Gazebo, PyBullet, Unity).
  • Strong foundation in computer vision, including object detection, segmentation, tracking, depth estimation, and 3D reconstruction.
  • Familiarity with vision-language models (VLMs/VLAs) or other multimodal architectures for physical reasoning and task execution.
  • Practical knowledge of deep learning, reinforcement learning, and probabilistic models applied to robotics.
  • Hands-on experience with ML/AI toolkits such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, ONNX, OpenCV.
  • Proven ability to optimize models for deployment on edge hardware (e.g., GPUs, TPUs, microcontrollers).
  • Understanding of sensor interfaces and protocols (e.g., mic, camera, pressure), and actuator control.
  • Awareness of ethical implications and user trust in autonomous or semi-autonomous systems. Understanding of safety-critical systems and relevant standards (e.g., ISO 13849, IEC 61508) is a plus.
  • Experience with edge-to-cloud architectures and integration of multiple sensory modalities (vision, audio, lidar) is desirable.

Leadership & Collaboration

·       Experience leading and mentoring cross-functional teams to deliver robotics or AI-enabled products from prototype to production.

·       Ability to translate complex ideas into technical strategies and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

·       A track record of influencing or shaping product vision through innovation, experimentation, and systems thinking.

·       Prior experience in roles combining R&D with client-facing activities.

·       Recognition through publications, patents, conference talks, or community contributions in robotics or AI.
