Job Summary

The Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention oversees the planning, coordination, and implementation of fire prevention programs to protect lives and property. This role includes supervising fire inspection, investigation, and education efforts to ensure compliance with fire codes and regulations. The Assistant Chief also leads a team of fire inspectors and investigators, manages fire prevention initiatives, and ensures efficient use of resources. They work closely with stakeholders to develop and enforce safety standards while maintaining readiness for emergency response. This position plays a critical role in fostering a culture of safety and prevention within the community and organization.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage fire prevention strategies, programs, and policies to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Supervise fire inspections and code enforcement activities, ensuring accurate documentation and follow-up on violations.
  • Lead fire investigation efforts to determine cause, origin, and circumstances of fires, and prepare detailed reports for legal and operational use.
  • Coordinate public education programs on fire safety and prevention, targeting diverse audiences including schools, businesses, and the general community.
  • Oversee training and professional development for fire prevention staff, ensuring certifications and knowledge remain current.
  • Collaborate with other departments and agencies to develop emergency plans and integrate fire prevention efforts into broader public safety strategies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and recommend improvements to building designs, operational processes, or policies to reduce fire hazards.
  • Maintain accurate records of fire prevention activities and provide regular updates to senior leadership.
  • Ensure the availability and proper maintenance of fire prevention tools, equipment, and resources.
  • Act as a liaison during major incidents, ensuring fire prevention considerations are integrated into emergency response operations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of fire department experience, including at least 3 years in fire prevention roles.
  • Completion of Fire Inspector III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer III, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, and Airport Fire Fighter training courses.
  • Proven expertise in fire code enforcement, fire investigation, and public education on fire safety.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable fire safety regulations, codes, and standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Fire Plans Examiner or equivalent credential.
  • Experience managing large-scale fire prevention initiatives or programs in a complex operational environment.
