What is a Data Scientist?
As a Data Scientist at Central Hudson Gas & Electric—a regulated electric and gas utility serving New York’s Mid-Hudson River Valley—you will gain valuable, hands-on experience applying fundamental data science methods to inform key business decisions. What does a Data Scientist do?
Collects, cleans, and organizes data from various internal and external sources
Conducts exploratory data analyses to identify trends, correlations, and insights
Develops, tests, and refines predictive models for operational outcomes
Creates data visualizations and dashboards to communicate results and recommendations
Participates in cross-functional projects to support business objectives
Documents findings, methods, and best practices for ongoing knowledge sharing
Collaborates with cross-functional teams to define project objectives and analytical requirements
Contributes to process improvements and data-driven strategies within the organization
Provides support for storm restoration efforts
What does it take to be a Data Scientist?
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or relevant and experience working with data (internships or academic projects are acceptable)
Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and data manipulation tools
Basic understanding of statistical techniques or machine learning concepts
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or a relevant field
3+ years of professional experience in data analysis, data science, or a related field
Demonstrated understanding of machine learning techniques and modeling approaches
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Experience with big data technologies, cloud platforms, or distributed computing frameworks

This position has a career path which allows for advancement opportunities within a job series. The title and level are commensurate with experience. Pay range: $71,900 – $168,700
