There’s No Us Without U. Care with Us, for Today and Tomorrow

There's no life without water, and at Urban Utilities, we live and breathe that knowledge every single day. It's why our people are so passionate about what they do and how they do it. And it's why we need people like YOU. Come shape our future with us and make a real and lasting impact across our teams.

Your opportunity:

Our Preventions team is looking for a curious, detail-oriented, strategic thinker to step into the role of Senior Data Scientist. This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact by applying your data science expertise to protect essential services and enhance customer outcomes, as well as shape the future of data science applications in operations at Urban Utilities.

About Network Services at Urban Utilities

Network Services is responsible for the performance and optimisation of Urban Utilities’ water and wastewater networks, serving over 600,000 properties and 1.3 million customers. Within this function, the Preventions team plays a critical role in reducing service risks and preventing failures. We do this by developing automated surveillance tools and business processes to detect and respond to performance anomalies in our water and sewer systems.

About the Role

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will partner with engineers and technical experts to translate complex data into actionable insights. You will analyse large, diverse datasets—including field instruments, asset data and lab results—to identify potential failures, improve asset performance, and boost operational efficiency.

You’ll also work directly with operations teams to design, maintain, and evolve data-driven tools that support proactive decision-making and real-time network management. Your work will directly contribute to safer operations, enhanced customer satisfaction, cost efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify lead indicators of service issues by analysing operational and asset data

  • Develop and refine predictive models and automated monitoring tools

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex operational challenges

  • Share knowledge and upskill team members on data science applications

  • Explore new ways to apply machine learning in an operational environment

  • Drive continuous improvement in processes and data usage

Success in this role will be measured by how effective analytics solutions are in achieving operational performance targets and outcomes, and continuous improvement of processes. How effectively the Senior Data Scientist lifts the knowledge of operations staff in potential applications of their area of expertise is also key.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, engineering or a related field from a recognised institution

  • Demonstrated experience in building, deploying and optimising data-driven models, as well as working with large datasets (particularly time-series and geospatial data) to extract meaningful insights

  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms, statistical modelling and predictive analytics

  • Strong programming skill in Python

  • Proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation

  • Well-developed communication skills, and experience presenting and collaborating on technical topics to non-technical stakeholders

  • Demonstrated experience in working with data from Operational Technology (particularly SCADA and Historian systems) and/or Internet of Things systems will be highly regarded

  • Proficiency in the following systems will be highly regarded: MS Azure, PowerBI and Geographic Information System (ArcGIS)

  • Experience working in a utility, or operations environment will be highly regarded

At UU, we celebrate diversity. We genuinely believe that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expressions is key and crucial to our success as a business.
